Summary:

Amateur colour film of a family enjoying Christmas Day during war-time.

Description:

The film clip shows the children 'asleep' in their beds on Christmas Eve, with empty stockings beside them. A clock face shows the time is 6.30. The mother is then seen putting decorations on a small Christmas tree. The Father puts up balloons on the wall. The clock face now reads 8.20.

On Christmas morning the mother is filmed sitting up in bed with her two children in their bed clothes beside her, opening presents from the stockings. They show their presents to the camera. The mother and children then go and look at the Christmas tree.

The film then shows the extended family sitting at the table for Christmas dinner. After eating they pull crackers and throw streamers whilst wearing paper hats.

Context:

This film is part of a much larger collection acquired by SWFTA.This particular amateur film collection includes a number of Christmas based events before, during and after the Second World War. This particular film was chosen as it is in colour and shows family life in the earlier part of the war.

SWFTA holds a number of other amateur films of Christmas based events during the Second World War. Given the rarity of film stock during this period it is interesting to note that many amateur filmmakers felt a need to record the Christmas festivities.
