Harrogate developed as a spa town in the 18th and 19th centuries, but in post-Second World War years, the town began to be marketed as a centre for conferences and exhibitions. This promotional film advertises Harrogate as the business centre of the North; highlighting the positive aspects of the town. The film, promotes the economic and travel infrastructure of the area, aiming to attract new business into the region, as well as advertising the town's conference and exhibition facilities. The film features a trade fair for men's wear held in Harrogate and the exhibition includes a fashion show demonstrating state-of-the-art man made fabrics and fashion cuts of the time such as ‘Terylene’ and ‘Evvaprest’ trousers. The film is highly evocative of the 1970s era in its style as well as reflecting the approach of many promotional films of the time. The Yorkshire Film Archive holds several other examples of promotional films for towns, regions and organisations around Yorkshire, including film advertising Scarborough as a popular seaside resort and travelogues of York and Ripon in the early 1920s. |
