The Wessex Film and Sound Archive collection houses several tourist films on seaside resorts in the South of England such as the Isle of Wight, Weymouth, Southampton, Portsmouth and Southsea. Amongst the collection there are also many on Bournemouth, the region's major seaside tourist attraction. The earliest known promotional film of Bournemouth was made in 1911, the original of which is held by the British Film Institute. In the archive's collection, there are several Bournemouth publicity films from the 1930s and 1950s, and the most recent from the 1980s. One example of such films is 'Beautiful Bournemouth', a colour film from 1950 produced for the Bournemouth Corporation. Of the tourist promotional films in the collection, this film stands out as a well produced depiction of the area, showing sights of bygone Bournemouth. The film evokes the spirit of the times, at the end of a period of austerity and the start of new era of British leisure and tourism. The film's soundtrack and commentary is typical of its genre and the images are of the attractive side of Bournemouth scenery. Alongside tourist agency films, some amateur film-makers from the Wessex region have also made interesting films promoting local towns such as Tony Chuter's films of Winchester and Dorset from the 1970s and James Gardiner's film 'See Southsea' from 1962.
