With the Solent and Southampton falling within its region, the Wessex Film and Sound Archive houses an excellent collection of films relating to naval, shipping and maritime history dating from the beginnings of film-making at the turn of the twentieth century, up to present day. The archive has a number of films depicting local and working life around the docks at Southampton. A series of 'Hythe Ferry Films' were made between 1927 and 1930 commissioned by the owner of the Hythe-Southampton ferry. They provide a rich portrayal of the Hythe Ferry paddle steamer running between the New Forest and Southampton docks, along with the surrounding quay area and its local people. The films are densely packed with images of shipping life and shows the funnelled ocean liners, the Hythe Pier railway, the huge floating dry dock in use at the time, and the look and clothing of the local people in the late 1920s. The Wessex Film and Sound Archive has many films that illustrate the history and development of these important dock lands. Another example of film featuring the docks is the 1946 film 'Port of Destiny' which illustrates the workings of the Southampton Docks before, during and just after the Second World War.
