Many films held in the Wessex Film and Sound Archive cover significant and interesting local events in the history of the region such as royal celebrations, visits to local areas by dignitaries, official openings and parades. One example of an early film covering an event in the region is the 'Hampshire Boy Scouts: Grand Rally at Southampton' (1912). This film shows a very early rally in the history of the Boy Scout movement, and features a visit by its founder Robert Baden-Powell. Baden Powel is seen in the film accompanied by his young fiancéà Olave Soames who later founded the Girl Guides. The film shows the local Boy Scout group demonstrating their skills in tent pitching, first aid, games and fire drills. The film also shows the crowds of spectators looking at the camera and shows some of the fashions and appearances of the time. The film was commissioned by a local cinema owner to encourage audiences to go to the cinema and see themselves on film. The film has historical interest for the region as a local event as well as illustrating some of the early history of the Scout movement. Alongside this film, local newspaper reports and Hampshire County Scout Association documents are also available relating to the event. The Wessex Film and Sound Archive also houses many other films covering events in the region including royal visits for example 'Queen Visits Winchester 1955', visits by King George V in 1912 and Prince Edward in 1926, military tattoos, civic processions, and the Cowes regattas amongst many others. |
