Many companies and organisations in the past have used film to advertise their business or to publicise their products or services. In the Wessex Film and Sound Archive a number of companies are represented in the collection, including films by piston ring manufacturers Wellworthy, biscuit makers Huntley & Palmer, shipbuilders Vosper Thornycroft, and films by ESSO such as 'Forest Heritage'. One major organisation that is well represented in the archive's film collection is The Portsea Island Mutual Co-operative Society (PIMCO). At its peak it was a thriving business and substantial local employer and a large collection of films were made under its banner over a number of years. Films made by organisations within the Co-operative Society often differ from many corporate films in their approach and subject matter. The films 'Building Works' and 'Behind the Scenes' by the PIMCO were probably intended for showing to its employees. The first film covers construction work on the PIMCO buildings being carried out by the staff themselves after a fire. 'Behind the Scenes' is a fascinating record of the every day working lives of PIMCO workers in different departments of the Portsmouth store in the 1930s. For example, the film shows board meetings, clerical staff, the butchers, bakers, dairy, furniture dept, and hair dressers amongst others. In the clip shown here, the hair dressing department is seen in action. See other Co-op films on this site: 'Co-operation' (1972) is a Co-operative Society training film held at the Media Archive for Central England, and 'A Romance of Co-operation' (1941) is a record of the work of the Peterborough and District Co-operative Society, held at the East Anglian Film Archive. |
