Subjects and periods

The archive's moving image collection features material dating from the turn of the twentieth century up to recent times and includes subjects and themes that touch on every sphere of life in the Wessex region in that time. The archive's collection features subjects such as the maritime heritage of the area, military history, transport, life during the Second World War, civic and local events, towns and village communities, and family life. The archive also holds films by and about organisations such as local councils, churches, schools, hospitals, public agencies, local businesses and work places.

Early film and cinema - The earliest film relating to the collection is one amongst a small number of surviving films made around the turn of the last century, by Southsea based film pioneer, Alfred J. The major naval and commercial port of Southampton is situated within the archive's region, and the archive holds many films that illustrate aspects of this industrial maritime centre. Key film-makers

  • Alfred J. West was a pioneer film-maker in the region, experimenting with film in its earliest days at the end of the 19th century. His films are important to the region because of the rarity of such surviving early film material, and the local interest of the subject matter in his films. Alfred J. West began his career as a photographer in Southsea and made his first moving film for the Royal Navy in 1897, recording the testing of the Whitehead torpedo off Portsmouth. He went on to make hundreds of films between the late 1890s and 1912, however, only a hand-full of his films survive today. His remaining films include the titles 'Masonic Ceremony' from 1902 and 'Our Navy of the Past' from 1905. The master material for the surviving films is held at the BFI and viewing copies are available at the Wessex Film and Sound Archive. His films represent good examples of early film-making along with a fascinating early piece of British naval history. A copy of his catalogue of films up to 1912 is held at the Wessex Film and Sound Archive along with a copy of West's unpublished autobiography 'Sea Salts and Celuloid'. See alos the website dedicated to Alfred J. West's films at www.ournavy.org.uk
