‘The Song We Sing is About Freedom’ is a film of the visit of a Hungarian male voice choir to Wales in 1975. Their visit involved teaming up with a Welsh male voice choir and staying with their families, resulting in a unique cultural exchange. The film shows how the Hungarians’ preconceptions about the Welsh changed during the exchange and through getting to know the people they stayed with. The narration talks about the views they held about the kind of reception they expected to get in Wales and how they were pleasantly surprised by the warmth and friendliness of their welcome. The culmination of the film shows the two choirs from very different backgrounds united in song, underlining the importance of community to both the Welsh and the Hungarian people. Other factual and documentary style films in the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales which give a sense of community include 'After Many a Summer – the changing face of Tiger Bay' (1968) about the docklands community in Cardiff under threat, ‘Silent Village’ (BBC, 1993) focusing on the people of a south Wales mining village, and the productions of Cardiff’s Chapter Video Workshop, mid 1970s to mid 1990s. |
