Tourism and leisure pursuits in Devon and Cornwall feature strongly in The South West Film & Television Archive's collection. The earliest film featuring seaside leisure and tourism in the collection dates from 1912, showing bathing machines and swimmers in Cornwall. 'Where Are You Going' is a tourist promotional film made in the 1950s to promote the delights of Plymouth and its surrounding area as an exciting destination for visitors. Other films in the collection on the theme of leisure and holidays include amateur footage of Punch and Judy shows, caravan holidays, film of surfers and boating activities, as well as news and documentary items on tourism. Examples of amateur film of holiday experiences in the South West include Frank Owner's films of surfers in Cornwall, family camping holidays, picnics and outings by the sea. One example of a news item from Westward television from the 1960s features Plymouth and surrounding areas, looking at what holidaymakers were doing that year and the effect of tourism on the town and region.
