'The Face of Scotland' is one of seven short documentaries commissioned by the Films of Scotland Committee especially for the 1938 Empire Exhibition. The films were made to promote the Scottish nation through subjects such as agriculture, fishing, industry, sport and education. This film gives a stirring account of Scottish history, people and landscape. The film also praises Scotland's traditional croft farming, its industrial might, its religion and education, the harshness and beauty of the landscape and its people's strength of personality. These themes are illustrated with scenes of castles and churches, universities and city streets, shipyards and steelworks, farmers crofts and local pubs. 'The Face of Scotland' and 'Seawards the Great Ships' (1960) are part of a significant collection held in the Scottish Screen Archive of over 160 documentary films commissioned by the Films of Scotland Committee between 1938 and 1982 which feature social, cultural and industrial aspects of Scotland's history. The Archive also produced the monograph 'To Speak Its Pride; the work of the Films of Scotland Committee 1938 - 1982' published by the Scottish Film Council 1996. 'The Face of Scotland', as part of the Films of Scotland Collection is also one of the films to be made available through the Edina 'Film and Sound Online' service to Higher Education.
