many with shot listings. The catalogue is accessible at the archive's
offices in Glasgow for academic, educational and historical research.
Any researchers wishing access to this facility can only do so by prior
appointment.
- Searching - The archive has developed a detailed
searchable online
catalogue from its own website which includes full descriptions
and shot listing for all accessible archive material. Academic users
can also contact the archive by post, fax or via e-mail with their request.
The archive staff can search the catalogue database on behalf of users
making research requests and can provide printouts of relevant catalogue
entries.
- Viewing - Currently over 2000 items in the collection
are available for users to view and researchers can make appointments
to view accessible material at the archive's premises. The Scottish
Screen Archive has facilities for researchers to view VHS and film copies
of material. These facilities are available by appointment only, please
contact the archive for further details. A small collection of VHS tapes
may be loaned to users for consultation off the premises, details of
charges for processing and usage are also available upon request. In
addition, the archive has a selection of its titles available for purchase
on VHS tape covering a variety of subjects.
Researchers should contact the archive directly regarding access to the
related collections of written, printed and photographic material in the
archive.
Exhibitions and related museum displays - Selections of the archive's
collections can be seen at a number of museums and exhibitions across
Scotland. Key exhibitions include The Museum of Transport in Glasgow,
which has a permanent exhibition on the history of ship building in the
area and includes a selection of archive film relating to the subject.
The Museum of Dundee displays a selection of archive film on jute manufacture
and the archive has also worked collaboratively with museums on subjects
such as regional railway exhibitions and the fishing industry in Scotland.
Remote Access to moving images
In addition to on-site access, selections from the archive's collection
are available to search and view at a number of internet sites:
- The SCRAN website provides a
sample of some 400 extracts of films from the Scottish Screen Archive.
The SCRAN site supports learning through access to still images, film,
audio and text from a variety of museums, galleries, and archives. The
site is aimed at schools as well as subscribing FE and HE institutions.
- The BBC
'Scotland on Film' website contains collections of film clips from
the Scottish Screen Archive that can be viewed online. The films are
grouped into themes such as work, homelife, health, and leisure.
- The Edina 'Film and Sound
Online' site includes film titles from various sources including
approximately 50 hours of digitised films from the Scottish Screen Archive
collection. These films are taken from the 157 documentaries in the
'Films of Scotland Committee' collection. The films are downloadable,
either in full, or as segments, and can be used in learning, teaching
and research. The service is available free of charge to UK Further
and Higher Education Institutions via Athens accounts, after the completion
of an institutional sub-licence document
- SCAN, the Scottish Archive Network
website brings 85 of the archives of Scotland together and provides
descriptions of these archive collections across Scotland including
written records and photographs. When the project is complete, users
can search the SCAN website for details of the Scottish Screen Archive
paper documentation collections relating to the production and exhibition
of film in Scotland such as stills, papers, production notes, pamphlets
other printed matter and administrative records of organisations' promoting
film culture, education and production since 1933.
