This amateur film by Ken and June Paine records one day's activities in a Folkestone hair salon. The film starts with preparations for opening of the salon at 7.25am and follows the activities through to the "last perm of the day" and closing up. The film presents scenes around the salon and clients having their hair styled. Other examples of material within the South East Film and Video Archive collection where amateur film makers have recorded their work-places include: 'Allwood Nurseries' (1952) – a carnation nursery in Sussex; 'At Work at Philips' (early 1960s) - men operating machinery and on a tea break, and 'Binding' (1997) - craftsmanship and daily routine in a traditional bookbinding firm in Surrey. By contrast, other material in the archive on the work place is promotional and advertising material designed for films for the cinemas and clients. These include 'A Family Tradition' (1953) - by meat and fish paste manufacturers Shippam's of Chichester - and 'Focus on Exports' (1968) - by the Dennis heavy vehicle manufacturers of Surrey. The archive also holds several promotional films which were made to show the work of hospitals, children's homes and charities and encourage donations to these good causes. For example, the film 'St. Bartholomew's Hospital' (1929) shows the working environment of this pre-NHS era hospital in Kent. |
