This film of a 'Band of Hope Demonstration' is one of a small number of films from the pre-First World War era in the Screen Archive South East collection. This film originates from a period from which few regional films depicting local people and activities have survived. The film shows a parade on Brighton seafront of members of the 'Band of Hope' temperance movement, an organisation which was established in 1847 to teach children around Britain of the evils of alcohol. It is likely that this film would have been made and screened by a local cinema owner, attracting audiences from Brighton and Hove to see their home town, and perhaps themselves, on screen and “sign the pledge” to become teetotal. Other local events in the early 20th century captured in the collection include the 'Godalming Church Parade' (c1913), 'Surrey Women War Workers' on a farm in 1917, film of the funeral of suffragette Emily Davison, who jumped in front of the Kings horse at the 1913 Epsom Derby and the 1913 Epsom Derby itself. The South East Film and Video Archive has a large collection of films spanning the 20th century of events in the region such as demonstrations and parades, coronation days and royal funerals, jubilee days, VE day celebrations, Festival of Britain events, village fairs and historical pageants. Another interesting record of a demonstration in the archive's collection is Ernie Trory's film 'Sussex 1939', made for the Sussex Communist Party. It shows a Party meeting, a demonstration against unemployment in Brighton and the Brighton 'March of History'. |
