Access and Facilities:
Screen Archive South East is committed to providing free public access
to the collection for educational, heritage and community use.
- Catalogue - The archive's online catalogue - Screen
Search - contains over 700 film records, over 100 film clips and
over 250 stills. The resource also combines extensive background information
on the films and links to reference resources around the region and
the UK. The catalogue will continue to grow with more records being
added regularly.
The archive's in-house database contains records for 3,000 films in
the collection of which over 2,000 are available for viewing.
- A new website featuring fashion on film in the 1920s and 1930s has been launched. Follow the link to find out more.
- Searching - Alongside the online catalogue, the archive's
offices at Brighton University provides access to viewing copies of
its collection and a detailed database of its holdings. To research
the archive's collection, academic researchers should e-mail their query
to the archive stating who they are, what they are looking for, and
reasons for wanting to use the archive collection. Archive staff can
then discuss requirements and search the database on their behalf. Alternatively,
users can make an appointment to search the archive database with help
from staff. Appointments can then be made to view any relevant films.
- Viewing - Items from the collection can generally
be viewed on VHS in a separate viewing room at the archive's offices
at the University of Brighton. All viewing must be booked in advance.
A selection of clips from the archive's collection can be also viewed
online on the Screen Archive's online resorce: Screen
Search. Additional selections of the archives holdings are on display
at a number of museums and archives in the region, including Brighton
Museum & Art Gallery, Hove Museum & Art Gallery, Brighton Fishing
Museum, the Centre for Kentish Studies at Maidstone, the University
of Kent Library at Canterbury, the Surrey History Centre at Woking and
Elmbridge Museum. Please contact the archive for further details of
these sites.
- Charges – The archive does not make any charges
to academic users for researching and viewing archive material. Nominal
charges may be incurred where copying and or postage are required. Please
contact the archive for details.
