The films of the Preston family, spanning the 1920s to the 1950s, represent a significant collection of amateur film material within in the North West Film Archive. Mr Joshua Preston’s twin sons, Sydney and Harold, began filming on 16mm in the late 1920s, recording family activities, local events and creating a local newsreel entitled 'Glengarry Topical News'. Sydney and Harold also had a keen interest in transport and filmed all forms of trains, trams, and trolley buses around the region up to the 1950s. Their film 'Railway Scenes - Wilmslow' begins with travelling shots of a train's journey from Wilmslow station to Manchester Piccadilly, and includes various shots of steam trains, diesel locomotives and goods trains moving along the tracks. The North West Film Archive has many films, both professional and amateur, that cover the subject of transport in the region including trains, trams as well as the Manchester Ship Canal, aeroplane, bus and car manufacturing and general scenes of public and private transport over time. One early example of transport in the archive is the 'Great London To Manchester Aerial Race' (1910), which depicts a biplane race from London to Manchester. |
