The North West Film Archive holds a number of large collections of films made by keen amateur cinematographers. These films present a fascinating record of everyday life and activities in the twentieth century through the eyes of non-professional film-makers. Joshua Preston’s twin sons, Sydney and Harold, made a large number of films on 16mm of events in a local newsreel entitled 'Glengarry Topical News' as well as recording their own family activities and holidays to places such as Bournemouth and abroad to Italy. In this film, Mr Joshua Preston, as Mayor of Stockport, is seen entertaining a group of nurses at his family home, Glengarry. The women arrive on a 'North Western' bus and are greeted by the Mayor who shows them around the gardens and grounds. The women are seen playing bowls and a local Stockport 'Wireless Services Van' provides musical accompaniment outside in the garden. The Preston twins had a particular interest in transport and filmed all forms of trains, trams, and trolley busses around the region up to the 1950s, including their film 'Railway Scenes - Wilmslow' (1954-56), for example.
