In the early part of the twentieth century, many cinema owners made films known as 'local topical' news films, to attract audiences in a period when there was much local competition. In the North West Film Archive, these films feature a huge variety of local events and scenes from around the region and date mainly from the 1910s to 1930s. This particular film is part of a collection of short films made by the Empire Cinema in Milnrow and shows scenes of work inside the Newhey Spinning Mill and Coral Mill, and textile workers in traditional dress leaving the mills. Other films in the archive made by the Empire Cinema show events such as the Whit Walk processions, or scenes of local people such as staff and children outside the cinema in Milnrow. The archive holds many other films in its collection showing the region in early twentieth century. For example, the archive holds film of an early Biplane race - 'Great London to Manchester Aerial Race 1910' and soldiers in training for the First World War 'The 4/5th Battalions Lancs. Fusiliers on the March' (1915). The archive also holds many films that illustrate the changes in the textile and other industries in the region throughout the twentieth century.
