This film records scenes of excavation work taking place to prepare Goyt Valley for submergence as part of Stockport Corporation's Water Works scheme to create a large reservoir. The building of reservoirs in this area dramatically changed the valley resulting in the demolition of many farms and houses. The film includes footage of men working on the site alongside steam cranes and railways. The film also includes footage of the inauguration of the Water Works on 25 February 1932. This film is one of a large collection of films in the North West Film Archive which illustrate industry and working life in the region. Other examples of films showing industrial processes include 'Messrs. Barlow & Jones Ltd. Manchester and Bolton' (1919), which shows the workings of a cotton mill, and 'A Glimpse Of Metrovick' (1956), which explores the Metrovick Trafford Park industrial complex. |
