This film from the early days of powered aviation shows the competitors, Graham White and Mr Paulhan, and their aircraft -at their respective starting points. The film shows the crowds watching as the biplanes take off and then disappear into the distance. Later in the film, the winner, Mr. Paulhan, is shown arriving at Manchester being greeted by more large crowds. This film is one of many in the North West Film Archive collection that show the region in early days of film and in the first two decades of the twentieth century. Other films from this era present local events such as football matches and Whit Walks, street scenes and crowds looking at the camera, for example 'Stockport Market' (1910), with its scenes of busy stalls, traders and shoppers in the market and early 'local topical' news films by the Empire Cinema, Milnrow, including 'Milnrow and Newhey Gazette' which depicts local scenes, such as inside the Newhey Spinning Mill and Coral Mill. |
