This film of a Carnival at Bury in the 1920s shows comical scenes of men dressed as the carnival King and Queen and a Jester. They perform for the camera before travelling by barge to the New Pier where they are met for a 'Coronation Ceremony' performed by the Mayor. The film goes on to present scenes of the procession and carnival, featuring bands, floats and Morris dancers. The North West Film Archive holds many such examples of films of fairs, carnivals and parades, sporting activities and entertainment made throughout the twentieth century. These include a large collection, dating from 1911, which feature the annual Whit Walks processions. One example of such a film is 'St Marks Whit Walks And Cheetham Hill Scenes' (1969), made in colour by local amateur film-maker Ralph Brookes. The archive also holds films showing a huge variety of other local events of significance such as royal visits, official openings, awards ceremonies, VE day and Jubilee celebrations, and contemporary music and cultural events. |
