Academic Projects and Research Work Using the ArchiveWith the University of Teesside as its base, the Northern Region Film and Television Archive has strong links with the academic departments and library resources at the University. The Archive director, Dr Leo Enticknap, teaches at the University of Tyneside on the History MA and supervises PhD students there. Students from the History department have also used archive film material as a resource for history projects. The University of Teesside is currently establishing a centre for research into Northern Region Studies and Simon Popple from the Media Studies section at the University of Teesside is working to stimulate research into the archive's collection. Dr Leo Enticknap and Simon Popple both teach on the BA Media Studies/Media Production courses which offers a module on media archive issues including film preservation and restoration, media ethics and copyright. PhD students and other academic researchers in the past have investigated the archive's holdings on subjects such as the history of shipbuilding on the Wear at Sunderland, documentary film-making, and gender representation in television news. The University of Northumbria, Institute for Image Data Research is also using the archive collection to investigate digital image retrieval. |
