This promotional film made by Turners film production company for the Borough of Sunderland Transport Department features bus transportation in the city of Sunderland and surrounding areas. The main aim of the film was to promote the use of buses following the withdrawal of trams from the city and the film gives a highly detailed account of the bus system itself. The commentary states that "few will appreciate the planning and organisation" for the running of the busses. The film also provides an excellent illustration of the city and surrounding areas, its landscape and industries. The film describes the industries which characterise the area including coal mining, shipbuilding and engineering, a glass works, the streets and terraced houses of Sunderland and the coastal districts of Roker and Seaburn. This clip shows the engineering work going on behind the scenes. There are a number of promotional films by public bodies and by private companies held in the Northern Region Film and Television Archive's collection that serve to illustrate the North and its commercial and industrial heritage. Another major collection is a series of promotional and training films made by Vickers-Armstrong at its shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness, including for example, Vicker's 'Future Craftsmen' from 1972.
