This is one of a collection of promotional films, in the Northern Region Film and Television Archive, made by the shipbuilders Vickers-Armstrong. It describes the work of a combined secondary school and technical college built in 1966 at Barrow-in-Furness which combined a conventional secondary education with the technical training that would form the basis of an apprenticeship at the Barrow shipyard. The film reveals something of the extent to which the shipbuilding industry and the communities it supported were intertwined, even to the extent of the company playing a leading role in the education of Barrow schoolchildren. Many other examples of films on the industrial heritage of the region, and ship building in particular, can be found in the Northern Region Film and Television Archive, including for example 'Birth of a Giant' (1972) on the launch of a giant steel tanker at the Vickers yard.
