Contact and access

Access and Facilities:

The Northern Region Film and Television Archive provides access to its collections for academics, students and educational institutions as well as businesses, media agencies community groups, libraries, museums, record offices, schools and members of the public.

  • Catalogue - Whilst accession and basic content information exists for most holdings, detailed information exists for very little material and less than 10% of the collection is fully shot listed. However, the knowledge and contacts of NRFTA staff can help with most access enquiries.
  • Searching - Enquirers are asked to write, fax or e-mail their research request to the archive staff. A search of archive holdings can then be conducted by the archivist and information provided to the enquirer about any holdings relevant to their request.
  • Viewing - Viewing of films and videos at the archive's premises is currently limited due to the forthcoming move to new purpose built facilities at Middlesborough. However, the new premises are intended to house a range of film and video viewing booths along with a fully equipped cinema adjoining the archive building.
The archive also has plans to develop further access to the collection in the future throughout the region through CD copies of archive holdings and eventually through broadband delivery.
  • Charges - For academic enquiries, viewing of film or video material on the archive premises is free of charge. Minimal charges to cover costs are made for copying and sending out VHS and DVD viewing copies of requested material.
