Access and Facilities:

The archive seeks to provide research access for non-commercial users to all the material in its collections, subject to any copyright restrictions and the prior demands of its preservation programme.

  • Catalogue – Some of the archive's collections are currently catalogued to different levels. At present approximately 30 per cent of the archive's holdings have fully catalogued records with a synopsis. The archive has plans to make a film database available online, containing around forty percent of the archive’s collection for searching.
  • Searching - Academic users can search the catalogue at the archive premises. The archive is open Monday-Friday, 10.00am - 5.00pm, and users should give at least 24 hours notice if they wish to make an appointment to visit the archive to search the catalogue.
  • Viewing – The archive has an extensive list of catalogue titles on compilation video available for hiring. These videos contain selections of material from the archive on a wide variety of subject themes. Viewing VHS cassettes can be loaned to academic users from the loan catalogue. Academic researchers and students can also gain access to the archive’s ‘off-air’ television recordings and view them on the premises. The archive also provides a bespoke service to academic researchers who are preparing for larger projects. Individual video and film viewing facilities are available for booking as well as a preview theatre which seats up to 25 people for groups of students. Users should contact the archive to arrange an appointment to view material on the archive premises and at least 5-7 days' notice is required to view any film selected. The Museum also has a 200 seat cinema which provides a programme of screenings showcasing the Museum's moving image collection and which complements its changing programme of special events and exhibitions.
  • Charges – Academic users are permitted free access to research and view the collection. Some charges may be imposed where preservation costs are incurred by the archive, or where viewing beyond a single half day session is required. Charges are made for copying film or video material, please contact the archive for further information. The collection is mostly Crown copyright or in the ownership of the Museum. Where copyright is held elsewhere the customer will be notified and clearance will be required before the material can be released. Special conditions apply for artists and art or film students wanting to use material for creating new artistic or documentary material and they should contact the archive to discuss their requirements.
