The Archives - The UK moving image archives in the public sector

There are twelve public sector film archives in the UK which together form a network of regional and national moving image collections, all of which are members of the Film Archives UK.

Click on the left menu or on the map to browse information on each of the archives.
Each archive has its own section - read and print out outlines of their collections, view selected film clips and find information on access procedures and contact details.

"Public sector moving image archives are repositories for the custody and preservation of, and access to, the history of our times as recorded on film, videotape and other moving image formats. Such archives contain works made by amateur and professional producers for cinema, television and other purposes. These archives encompass the history and culture of moving image media and respect the integrity of the works above any commercial and short term exploitation. These institutions operate for the public good on a 'not for profit' basis."

National and Regional coverage

All of the public sector film archives aim to collect, preserve and provide access to the UK's moving image heritage. The English regional film archives have a remit to collect moving image material of relevance to their region. This includes audio visual material made either in or by people from each region. The National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales and the Scottish Screen Archive have a national remit and cover Wales and Scotland respectively, and the BFI National Film and Television Archive covers the whole of the UK. The Imperial War Museum Film Archive's collection is dedicated to film and video related to twentieth century conflict involving British and Commonwealth forces.

Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland does not have a dedicated national moving image archive. The Ulster Folk & Transport Museum has a film collection and for further information on the film and television history of Northern Ireland, contact the Northern Ireland Film and Television Commission.

The Northern Ireland Film and Television Commission is an integrated agency for the development of the film industry and film culture in Northern Ireland. The Commission’s Digital Film Archive (DFA) is an access resource (not available over the internet) for researchers, students, historians, and anyone who has an interest in moving images in Northern Ireland. The DFA contains 55 hours of moving images about Northern Ireland from 1897-2000.  There are 389 items covering drama, animation, documentaries, news, newsreel, amateur and actuality film.

Other UK film collections

Alongside these twelve archives, there are a number of other public sector moving image archives in the UK. These include the film and television collections found at the BBC, educational institutions and record offices. Scholarly use of moving image material from the BBC’s Film and Television Archive is accessed through the British Film Institute’s National Film & Television Archive. There are also commercial moving image archives including film and television company archives, 'stock shot' libraries and small private collections.

London - There is no publicly funded regional film and video archive for the London area, but there are many small collections held in museums, libraries and archives around the city. London's Screen Archives is a regional network which helps researchers and the public find these collections and tries to ensure the preservation of important material made in or about London.

Related collections - Several institutions and museums hold collections of complimentary material of direct relevance to the study of moving images. These include:
