Contact and access

Access and Facilities:

The archive provides access to the collection for research by historians, writers, artists, researchers, teachers and students from universities, schools and colleges, as well as programme makers, exhibition organisers and members of the public with a personal interest in the collections.

  • Catalogue - A proportion of the archive's collection is available in an online catalogue hosted by the University of East Anglia Library. Users can search just the Film Archive, or the Film Archive and Library together, or, through MetaLib, search the Film Archive together with a range of other electronic resources. The online catalogue replaces and enlarges upon the four volume catalogue published in the 1970s and 80s.
  • Searching - Enquirers are asked to phone or e-mail indicating their research interest. Archive staff can then help users with their enquiries and search the archive's catalogue and lists of un-catalogued material on their behalf. Researchers can access the detailed descriptions of catalogued films through the online catalogue.
  • Viewing - Researchers are encouraged to visit the archive to view any material they may be interested in. The archive has viewing and transfer facilities for a wide variety of film and video formats. The archive also has a large number of published video compilations of its material on a number of different topics of local interest aimed at a general audience. These compilations can help to give new users of the archive a sense of the type and breadth of material in the collection, and a list can be supplied on request.
  • Charges – There is no charge for students to pursue their research in the archive. For academic staff requesting material for presentation there may be some small charges depending on the costs incurred by the archive. However, academic users wishing to research and view archive material on the premises will not usually be charged a fee. Any use of material outside the archive may incur costs.
