Delius: Song of Summer

  • Date: 1968
  • Television Company / Broadcaster: BBC

'Delius: Song of Summer' is one of a series of biographical films directed by Ken Russell for the BBC in the 1960s. This film explores the life and work of the composer Frederick Delius, and is based on the memoirs of Eric Fenby, who cared for Delius in the last years of his life. Along with his documentary film 'Elgar', 'Delius: Song of Summer' represents one of the best examples of the early work of Ken Russell who began working for television, and became a leading figure in the British film industry. Single dramas were a strong feature of British television in the 1960s and 1970s, especially those made by the BBC. Other examples of single dramas and drama documentaries in the bfi's television collection include Peter Watkins' controversial 'The War Game' (1965) and Ken Loach's powerful story of homelessness 'Cathy Come Home' (1966).
