The hugely popular British television series 'Steptoe and Son' about a father and son team of rag and bone merchants was written by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, famous for their creation of 'Hancock's Half Hour' (1956-61). In the early days of the use of video on British television, video stock was expensive and re-usable, and many television series made on video were wiped and the stock re-used. This was the fate of the 1970s BBC series of 'Steptoe and Son'. However, and as a result of the bfi NFTVA campaign Missing Believed Wiped, several 'lost' programmes including instalments from the Steptoe and Son series have been located in private collections. The 'Steptoe and Son' episodes, though originally screened in colour, had been recorded in black and white on an obscure video format by the series’ writers themselves and have now been painstakingly restored by the bfi despite technical problems and deterioration of the tape. The recovered episodes have since been re-transmitted by the BBC and screened at the National Film Theatre. Other Missing Believed Wiped finds include episodes from series' of, 'At Last the 1948 Show', 'Doctor Who', 'Quatermass', and 'The Avengers'. |
