An important part of television history that is often neglected both in the archiving and the studying of television, are the links, trailers, and advertisements that form the connecting elements between the programmes and make up the whole of the experience of television viewing. The bfi National Film and Television Archive periodically records whole day's outputs from specific channels, making available for research the whole day's viewing as it was broadcast, in the correct order. The earliest available recordings of television output including advertisements and links date from 1963, recorded by ATV of their own output. This single night's output from 1963 was shown at the National Film Theatre including 'Sunday Night at the London Palladium', '77 Sunset Strip', the news and advertisements for Cadbury's Flake and Shell. The bfi television archive collection also includes the entire first week of broadcasts from Channel Four in 1982 and Channel Five in 1997. In addition, selected whole days from BBC output are regularly captured by the archive in 'off-air' recordings. |
