Filmed by Frank Hurley as a record of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ill-fated but heroic attempt to cross Antarctica in 1914-1916. The expedition route was to land on the Weddell Sea coast and then to cross Antarctica via the South Pole to the Ross Sea. Within 80 miles of land the ship, Endurance, became trapped in pack ice. Shackleton and the crew drifted north for nine months before the ship began to be crushed in the ice. Endurance was abandoned and sank in November 1915. The crew drifted on ice floes for several months taking three small boats which they eventually used to row to Elephant Island. Shackleton and 5 crew members then undertook a heroic journey by boat across 800 miles of sea to South Georgia. The island had to be crossed before finally reaching a whaling station. After four rescue attempts Shackelton finally managed to rescue his men. The film which had been taken by Hurley accompanied lecture tours given by Shackleton on his return. The restored version of South was constructed by the NFTVA from a wide range of materials. Tinting and toning was applied to match the original prints, creating a spectacular visual record of this heroic journey. |
