Terence Davies’ autobiographical film about working class life in 1950s Liverpool traces the story of his family through episodes that detail their daily rituals and relationships. The marriage of the eldest child initiates memories of the past for the family, especially their lives during the Second World War. The emotional struggles experienced by the characters when they were children, begin to seep into their adult lives, revealing the strong hold their autocratic father still has over his family, despite his death some years before. One of the many hundreds of trailers held by the NFTVA, this one of 'Distant Voices Still Lives' provides a useful source with which to illustrate the feature’s reception and reveals the marketing strategy used to promote the film throughout Britain. This is an example of a bfi production, but the NFTVA holds many other trailers that reflect the rich history of British film culture. |
